#5a - Faceless Killers - Henning Mankell (Choice: Concensus)(Venue: part of meeting 5)

An additional book to tide the non-mothers over until the Jan 2007 meeting for Joy Luck Club.

Doris reads this author in the original Swedish and we decided that something was lost in translation as it came across as nothing more than a fairly undistinguished detective novel in the translation.

The build up was interesting despite some stilted language but the conclusion eventually came too suddenly, as though the author had become bored.

#5 - The Joy Luck Club - Amy Tam (Choice: Sarah's)(Venue: Ping Pong)

Present: Nic, Annabel, Jen and Sarah

Our first food-matching outing!

The book and the food met with approval by those who were present, with the mothers amongst us finding the mother-daughter relationships particularly poignant.

#4 - To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee (Choice: concensus)(Venue: Taz, Waterloo)

Present: Jen, Sarah, Nic, Doris, Annabel

Generally very well liked as I recall the meeting.

I enjoyed the novel but felt it was dated and simplistic.

#3 - Daniela Deronda - George Elliott (Choice: Jen's)(Venue: The Salt Yard?)

Present: Nic, Doris, Annabel, Jen, Sarah

What can I say - almost universally derided, almost universally unfinished.

#2 - The God of Small Things - Arundhati Roy (Choice: Nic's)(Venue: Zizi)

Present: Nic, Doris, Annabel, Jen, Sarah, Sabine

A favourite of mine but, as I recall, the general concensus was it is pretty dark and depressing.

#1 - The Poisonwood Bible - Barbara Kingsolver (Choice: Jen's)(Venue: The Wolseley)

Present: This one was just me and Jen.

Interesting book and set-up but I found the voice of the youngest character unconvincing.

The W is fab!
